Sweet Sue

So the play i'm in "Sweet Sue" has just been extended 2 more weeks due to the positive reviews it's been recieving. 6 reviews and they've all been great so far. We've even recieved a "Go" from LA Weekly as a recomended play to see.I'm particularly proud of this because there are other more well known theatres who were reviewed as well that did not recieve a "Go." If you around North Hollywood on the weekends or your looking for some theatre to see, then I think it's worth your while to check us out. GO SWEET SUE A.R. Gurney's stock in trade is as an erudite chronicler of Wasp culture and romantic conundrums. Here, he is not at his witty, engaging best, but director Ernest Figueroa and a stalwart cast make this problematic play worth a viewing. Sweet Sue is a variation on that old standby, the May-December romance. The action unfolds in the spacious Philadelphia home of Sue Weatherall, a middle-of-the-road artist who has a fling with Jake, a college buddy and roommate of her son Ted. Because Jake is rooming at her house for the summer, he agrees to do some nude modeling for Sue, which, to no one's surprise, gradually turns into a romantic fixation. That not much occurs in this highly talky play is not the problem. The two characters are played by four actors, two Sues and two Jakes. The artifice allows for dual perspectives and approaches, but this double representation becomes confusing, especially when all four actors are onstage, and when the author splices time segments, which he often does. What's more, notwithstanding some humorous moments, there really isn't a lot here that forcibly engages. The romance predictably fizzles, and one is left with a sense of "Yeah, and ..." The upside is the fine acting: Figueroa's cast members (Laurie Morgan, Janet Wood, Sean McGee and Brandon Irons) work well together. Wow, it's been a long time since i've updated this thing. It's 2010 and i'm still trying to wrap my head around what's been going. To start I was lucky to get cast as a lead in a film that will shot for the month of February. It's called "Crushing Violet" and I play a highschool drama teachers who has to come to terms with a student who is infatuated with him. I also was lucky to be cast in a play called "Sweet Sue," by A.R. Gurney. it's a tough balancing act right now because I rehearse for the play during the week and shoot the film on the weekends. Luckily the film will wrap about 2 weeks before the play opens. With all this happening, I had to make a decision to step away from my day job for a few months. I'm officially a full time working actor. I'm sorry did I say working? I meant to say starving. I'll throw up some pictures in a week or so of the set.

Well it finally happened. We had our opening weekend last weekend and it went pretty well. I included a few final dress rehearsal shots for you. We had previews Thursday and Friday night and Saturday was our official opening. We were fortunate enough to sell out everynight as well except our matinee which was about 3/4 full. This has been such an amazing learning experience and I have 7 more weeks to hone and improve. The work is never done! I'll keep you posted on projects I have lined up when the run is over. It's nice to finally put a face with the play. Were less than 20 days from opening and I'm getting really excited about how it's going to be recieved. We've been very under the gun in our rehearsals. We started off in Westlake in a rec room, then into a house in Toluca Lake, and now finally to a rehearsal stage in NoHo. Were only going to have a few tech rehearsals with lighting etc. so it's a crucial time period for success. I'll give you an update as it gets closer!

I had and audition this morning for a day player role on the new fall TV Show Eastwick. I'm excited because things are starting to pick back up a little more now that were heading into fall and my manager is working hard to get me out there. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Greeting! My name is Sean McGee and I started this blog to share a little about my experience as an actor living in Los Angeles. I've learned a few important things while I've been here. Most importantly that it is much more than working on your craft, but learning to be a profesional, to act professional, to carry yourself professionally, and to be treated as a professional. For as much time as we all spend working and competing, most others would probably have law degrees, or Phd's, or MBA's. However, since there is no rhyme or reason to success it comes down to where timing and preparation meet, or in other words luck. I've rambled enough for now but I'll try my best to keep you updated on my success and challenges ahead. I'm currently in rehearsals for a theatre production entitled "Follow Your Dreams." I'm lucky to be with talented writers and directors as well as actors on this project. Previews for the show start on September 10th and I'll update you until then! Thanks for listening!
